Program Information

Target Group

House of Refuge Sunnyslope (HRS) specifically serves men, ages 18 and above who are homeless or coming out of homelessness.  HRS receives referrals from prison ministries, the VA Hospital, Phoenix Police Department, St. Vincent de Paul, John C. Lincoln Hospital, churches, and other shelters. Individuals also "walk in" with no referral.  All residents must be clean and sober to participate in the program and cannot have a conviction or plea bargain for a violent crime, sexual assault, or arson.

Overview

HRS is a faith-based shelter that has been located in the Sunnyslope area since 1988 and has served more than 2,500 individuals. Our non-profit organization is governed by an elected Board of Directors. The staff is relatively small so volunteers are a valuable and necessary component for the overall operation and success of HRS.  Our program is three-phased and can accommodate up to 40 men.

Phase I - New residents live in an 8 bed dormitory at the the main facility.

Phase II - After 30 days, residents qualify to move to one of six 2-man rooms at the main facility.

Phase III - After demonstrating successful life skills, men qualify to move to transitional housing in the neighborhood providing rooms for 20 men.

HRS has laundry facilities, computers with Internet access, local phone service, and exercise equipment available to all residents. Incoming men receive clean bedding, towels, a toiletry kit, and clothing as needed.  Each resident must obtain full-time employment or work part-time if attending school. Weekly fees are collected from each resident for participation in the program and everyone performs regular housekeeping and maintenance chores. Residents prepare their own breakfast and lunch each day and volunteers prepare hot meals each evening.

Other Supportive Services

HRS assists residents in becoming eligible for AHCCCS and registering for other benefits such as the Veterans Program, job services, behavioral health services, and substance abuse outpatient groups.  HRS provides assistance for dental services and offers discounted bus passes. Life skills evaluation and training is provided by laymen. Volunteers conduct Bible study meetings three evenings a week where the residents are involved in continued fellowship and spiritual growth. Bible studies are mandatory for Phase I and II residents and voluntary for Phase III residents. Additionally, residents are encouraged to affirm family relationships and participate in community activities.

Funding

House of Refuge Sunnyslope is a qualified 501(C) (3) non-profit organization.  We receive no government funding and depend on monetary support from churches, individuals and residents' program fees to keep the program flourishing.  All donations to the program are tax deductible according to IRS guidelines. HRS is also referenced on the Charitable Tax Credit List with the Arizona Department of Revenue which allows a qualified taxpayer to receive a Charitable Giving Tax Credit for donations to HRS (refer to AZ Form 321 for details).
